As a somewhat controversial photographer, Gioia de Bruijn (1986) makes intimate but aesthetic reports, leaving out the voyeurism. De Bruijn sews together a floating experience between ‘letting go’; ‘getting high’; ‘sexual realism’ and ‘towers that present the epitome of todays modern capitals with their seemingly endless glazing walls’.

Through high angle compositions and an extensive energy in the pictures the artist immerses us in a micro world where the passing of time is altered, the mind is not in control, the intensity of sound is different and a world where the consciousness changes course. Her work reminds us of the snapshot aesthetic of Nan Goldin and the honesty and trust in her work, but also of another headstrong woman, the modernist photographer Berenice Abbott.

Gioia de Bruijn graduated with honours from the Camberwell College of Arts in London. Gioia de Bruijn will have her second solo show "States of Glory" at Flatland Gallery, opening March 31st 2019, which will run through May 18th.
